A Message from the President
President’s Message
Your conference planning committee is finalizing details
for our meeting with CATFACS the last weekend in January.
National leaders are also working to plan the start of AAFCS’s
Centennial in Milwaukee in June 2008.
Colorado in History
I attended AAFCS Leadership Training in October and discovered
a bit of Colorado history in the process. Although the
Colorado Affiliate with its 27 members became reality in
1924, Denver was the site of the 2nd Annual Meeting in
July, 1909. Colorado also hosted annual meetings in 1930,
1960, 1971 and 1992. We do have a long and proud history.
What’s New? AAFCS has just produced a Public Policy Deliberation Guide
titled Financial Fitness…It’s Priceless. You can sign on to the
members’ only portion of the site to download a copy. While you are looking
at the site, you might want to also review the Communities Pages—there
are 12 of them now and a special one for affiliates. Becoming part of a community
is easily done on line. There is also material on the AAFCS site that describes
the body of knowledge within Family and Consumer Sciences.
AAFCS is also using information from the National Standards for Family and
Consumer Sciences Education and from the National Career Clusters initiative
to develop pre-professional competency assessments and industry-recognized
credentials. We are part of a busy 8,000 member professional association.
All of the above makes it an exciting time to be a member of AAFCS. Our luggage
tags and I Pod/ cell phone cases were popular items at the conference, too…

The JAAFCS
The November issue of the Journal includes many articles
of interest to members and colleagues.
Carole Makela, Editor, provides her Point of View, “Are
You Providing Balance to This Journal?” (5-6). Articles
include service learning and food security in low-income
families (9-14); nursing home design (15-20); use of light
and color in Alzheimer’s facilities (21-27); medieval
Japan’s view of fetal development and dietary needs
during pregnancy (28-35); and using student surveys to measure
teaching effectiveness (36-41). Practice and strategy articles
include teaching a consumer course in London (42-43); using
Small Steps to Health and Wealth™ to combine health
and financial education (44-45); internships (46-48); personal
ethics with a learning/teaching tool (48-51); and preparing
secondary FCS teachers using case studies (52-54). Career
profiles and book reviews are also included.
2009 issue themes are included to suggest topics that members
including students should plan to write about. Yes, you too
can write.
Reminder: The Journal can be used for earning PDUs. See
the AAFCS website’s Certification link.
Nominate a Co-Worker or Friend Do you have a co-worker or
friend that you know does exceptional FCS programs, is involved
in the community, is active in CAFCS? I bet most of us know
at least one or more individuals that fit the description.
SO, take a few minutes and nominate that person for one of
the 2008 CAFCS Awards!
CAFCS gives 3 awards to recognize our members. Here's a
little about each.
CAFCS Professional of the Year recognizes a member who has
made significant contributions to the profession as well
as the association including creative and/or innovative
activities promoting FCS. They should also provide encouragement
and support for other association members. The person has
also demonstrated leadership in other community organizations
or associations.
CAFCS Marcile Wood Community Service award recognizes a
member for outstanding service to the community through activities
other than those related to his/her professional position.
While preference is given to members of the Home and Community
Section, all CAFCS members can be nominated.
CAFCS Teacher of the Year recognizes an outstanding teacher
for programs that are both timely and newsworthy and expand
the focus of family and consumer sciences. The nomination
should focus on one area or program rather than the broad
FCS program in their school. The person nominated for this
award is eligible to submit for National Teacher of the Year
the following year.
Nominations can be submitted by email, FAX or snail mail
with deadline January 10, 2008 to Awards Chair Luann Boyer.
To get complete guidelines and nomination form, email Luann
at luann.boyer@colostate.edu or call 970-542-3544 or contact

Information about Your County
If you want to learn about the uninsured in your area,
demographic data, Medicaid enrollment, or safety net populations,
you might want to check out the newly updated Colorado Health
Institute web site. It can be found at http://www.coloradohealthinstitute.org/.
The site allows you to look at some trends graphically. They
have a series of publications focused on safety net issues.
The site also has links to some of the following.
The State Demographer’s office has data about the population in relation
to age, gender and ethnicity. Their site is http://dola.colorado.gov/demog/index.html.
Some of that data is available on a community level as well as county level,
at least for larger communities.
National Reports with Local Relevance:
Rural American at a Glance, 2007
This USDA Economic Research Service (ERS) publication highlights
the most recent indicators of social and economic conditions
in rural areas for use in developing policies and programs
to assist rural areas. The brochure provides information
on key rural conditions and trends for use by public and
private decision-makers and others involved in efforts to
enhance the economic opportunities and quality of life for
rural people and their communities.
Between Here and There: How Attached Are Latino Immigrants
to Their Native Country?
The Pew Hispanic Center released a report that analyzes data
from a national sample of Latinos to determine how much contact
Hispanic immigrants have with their native country. The attachment
of Latino immigrants to their native country, or "transnationalism," is
measured by levels of remittance-sending, phone calls, and
return visits. Just one in ten Latino immigrants engage in
all three of these behaviors on a regular basis, the report
finds. It also finds that immigrants' transnational behavior
is related to the years immigrants have been in this country;
the age they were when they first arrived; and their country
of origin. Furthermore, it is correlated with their attitudes
toward the U.
